Recent growth in broadband connections has enabled growth in Web based videoconferencing solutions like Skype Videoconferencing that are affordable to be used in our homes. But you still need a PC for that.
Now Microsoft wants to take us one step further and make videoconferencing ubiquitous through a television based videoconferencing system. In a patent application “Television system video conferencing”, made public yesterday, Microsoft describes such a system that can be used in your home through a TV Set Top Box connected to the Internet.

HP Labs recently made public the research paper that shows HP working on quite an interesting PC based Web Conferencing system called Coliseum.
HP Coliseum has 5 separate cameras attached to the PC monitor and directed to the participant. These cameras acquire video feeds of the participant from the different angles and combines them into a 3 dimensional representations with the help of the specialized software on a standard PC. 3D representations of each participant are then placed into a shared simulated environment that gives the appearance that all the participants are in the same room.
